History: The Northrop P-61B Black Widow was the largest, heaviest and
most powerful fighter of the World War II. Although designed in 1940, the P-61
did not see action until the last years of the war because of delays in its
radar apparatus. Just over 700 were built in three principal versions. Some
photorecon models were in service until 1952. The model represented in this
sim is No. 239713 of the 548th Night Fighter Squadron 7th Air Force, U.S. Army,
which was the last aircraft to shoot down an enemy plane in WWII.
Excuses: This model is as close an approxiation as I could manage with
FS4/AAF. The flight model is pure guesswork based on the FS4 Starship model.
An accurate model may not be possible as most of the specs needed lie somewhere
between the light prop maximums and the heavy prop minimums. As a result both
the wieght and power are well below actual figures. If anyone can come up with
a better flight model I would love to have it.
More Excuses: The visual model is quite accurate and detailed. There are some
odd views, especially from dead font and back, but the overall effect is good.
One serious limitation is the amount of detail FS4 can display, and the size of
its font. This is most noticeable on the nose art. The original depicts the
typical scantily clad babe and reads "Lady in the Dark" - my version (although
limited) is probably the first example of nose art in an AAF model. And it's
good enough for rock'n'roll ! - 'nuff said.
